Holland State Park, Holland, Michigan

 8/10/2023 to 8/17/2023

We thoroughly enjoyed having Maudie and Walt with us at three state parks - Young, Wilson, and Holland. They headed back to Alexandria on 8/14/2023. This is a picture of them at the Grand Rapids Airport.

Holland State Park is a very popular destination spot. The surrounding area is swarming with people and the campground itself was very crowded. The temperature was very pleasant. It didn't rain at all until Maudie and Walt left - then it really poured. Walt explored the park and surroundings extensively - both on foot and on one of the electric bikes (sans power). He directed us anywhere we wanted to go. Here is a picture of him on the bike.

Maudie was the expert at finding hikes for us every afternoon. We really enjoyed the Riley Trails, a few miles from the park.  One day Scott and Walt fished and Maudie and I did one of the Riley hikes. The next afternoon we all did another hike.  Our last day we hiked up to Mt. Pisgah and had a picnic lunch. Here are pictures from the top.

The ongoing problem with our door locking us out got a lot worse. It seemed like we had to crawl in the window to get in about half the time. By googling what other people have said about this problem we may have found a solution - but we have thought that before, so we'll see.

Walt and Maudie put Michigan on our RV map.

Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Wisconsin, and now the Upper Peninsula and Michigan.

We of course spent a lot of time playing cards - Euchre, Oh Hell, and Hearts.

    Unusual happenings:
  • We lost power in the middle of the night (Sunday 13th/Monday 14th). The park power was fine. When Scott reset the connection, the power would come back on, but go back off almost immediately.  Same thing happened when he turned on the generator. Was potentially a pretty devastating problem, since we don't have solar or lithium batteries to "live off the grid". Scott texted Rick, the RV tech who fixed our bedroom lights when we were at Young State Park. Rick knew exactly what the problem was and how to fix it. He even talked Scott through doing a workaround so that we can have power until it is fixed. Rick ordered the part/electrical box we need. We will drive back to Petoskey on August 17th so he can fix it.
  • The next night, the alarm for propane begin going off (very loud, like a smoke alarm). The only way Scott could get it to stop was to turn off the propane completely. Scott figured out the problem, which is a part that needs replacing. He had been looking into it because the alarm has been going off periodically for a while. Before it always stopped beeping after hitting the reset button. Not this time. I imagine it was pretty disruptive for our neighbors, although no one complained. Scott asked Rick to order the part, and Rick will put it in while we are back in Petoskey.

  1. I’m just catching up on your adventures. Lovely to see the time you had with Walt & Maude. And happy that you found such a great Mobil tech on the road!
