Columbus Belmont State Park Campground, Columbus, Kentucky

10/19/2023 to 10/25/2023         We traded a beautiful sunrise at our last campsite for an absolutely gorgeous sunset at this campsite. This was our view playing cards each afternoon/evening.           We also traded a postage stamp size site for an enormous site with a distant view of the Mississippi River.                We got to participate in what is an annual community event here at the park - celebration of Halloween on Oct 21. The small park was jammed full - not just all of the 38 campsites but loads of extra cars coming just for Halloween. Most sites were decorated and we had more than 100 young costumed trick or treaters.                The park has lots of Civil War History. As you walk through you see cannons, a huge  anchor  and chain that was spread across the Mississippi during the war, lots of signs detailing wh...

Canal Campground, Land Between the Lakes, Grand Rivers, Kentucky

10/12/2023 to 10/19/2023          I remember hearing about the Land Between the Lakes from people camping in Wisconsin. It's a great stretch of land with lots of outdoor attractions. The Canal Campground where we stayed is at the northern tip of the stretch, on the canal that connects the Kentucky Lake (the Tennessee River) and Lake Barkley (the Cumberland River).           Our campsite was unique for us - basically a big parking lot designated for group camping. People coming as a group would have their doors open to the parking lot.           We turned our RV around so that we had a little bit of yard and view of woods. It was definitely a site with minimal unpacking - no mats, canopies, screen houses. We did get out chairs and our propane fire for evening cards and morning fire. Most days it was too chilly to be pleasant outside for morning coffee. We didn't even attempt paddle boarding or kaya...

Barren River Lake State Resort Park, Lucas, Kentucky

10/5/2023 to 10/12/2023         Barren River Lake State Resort Park is our first "resort" state park. It did have a lot of features, like a lodge, restaurant, golf course, marina, stables. None of those places were particularly busy. The campground was pretty full the whole time we were here. Our site was stuck right in the middle of a row of RVs. But it was a pull through site and had a full hook-up and a view of the woods in front, so pretty good.            Highlight of our week was a visit from my sister Kate. She flew into Nashville and got a rental car. She arrived the day we arrived and left the day we left. The first night she did a face plant getting out of the cab bed in the middle of the night.  Lucky nothing was broken, but sort of messed up her face.          We had one paddleboard/kayaking adventure. It was pretty chilly, but fun.           We saw s...

Nolan River State Park, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

9/28/2023 to 10/5/2023         Did you know that Bowling Green, Kentucky, is the only place in the world where Corvettes are made? Here is a picture of one of the cars in the Corvette Museum we visited.          We were in Bowling Green, which is about an hour away from Nolan Lake State Park, because I had a high blood pressure scare. I discovered my blood pressure was 140/80 when I took it at one of the Walmart automatic machines a couple of weeks ago. I have a cuff/stethescope in the RV, so I've been taking it pretty compulsively since then. It got up as high as 160/92. I had a virtual visit with the PA in my Austin doctor's office, who ordered blood work and medication. She and I figured out a lab in Bowling Green where she could send the orders. She sent the prescription to HEB in Bee Cave, and they sent it to a Walmart in Bowling Green. I'm always amazed at how well that system for getting medication works on the road. Y...
